W czasie gdy po świecie wciąż krąży widmo katastrofy jądrowej, jaka podobno zagrażała Japonii w związku z pamiętnym tsunami w 2011 roku, a sąsiednie Niemcy deklarują stopniową likwidację tej gałęzi energetyki, w Polsce konkretyzuje się plany budowy pierwszej siłowni jądrowej. Płyniemy pod prąd czy po prostu zachowujemy zdrowy rozsądek, gdy inni wpadają w nieuzasadnioną panikę?
Nie ulega wątpliwości, że polski bilans energetyczny nie wypada nadzwyczajnie. W szczególności ten na nadchodzące dekady. Brakuje w nim przede wszystkim czegoś, co można by określić jako perspektywa politycznej swobody decyzji co do źródeł czerpania zasobów energetycznych. Ponadto odczuwamy wyraźny deficyt pewności co do przyszłych dostaw, a w każdym razie – ich rzeczywistych kosztów. Gospodarczych i politycznych. Mamy bowiem do dyspozycji głównie energię z surowców importowanych (gaz, ropa), w praktyce od jednego dostawcy. Brak nam też ekologicznej wiarygodności tam, gdzie nasza energia pochodzi z własnych zasobów. Nic dziwnego, skoro produkujemy ją głównie z wyjątkowo nielubianego przez Unię Europejską i światową ekologię węgla kamiennego. A z tzw. emisjami trzeba się przecież żegnać w tempie ekspresowym, bo wypalą kieszeń budżetu państwa że szkoda gadać.
Ekolodzy mówią o rozwiązaniu energetycznej łamigłówki, tkwiącym w tysiącach niewybudowanych jeszcze wiatraków, w szerokim wykorzystaniu biomasy i w ogóle w rozproszeniu energetycznego wysiłku kraju, opartego na tzw. zasobach odnawialnych. Politycy i stratedzy gospodarki zaś – że to doskonałe uzupełnienie. Bo praktyczne rozwiązanie tej skali problemów, co nasze, jest jedno. Energetyka jądrowa. Potężna, czysta i bezpieczna.
Być może nie bez znaczenia jest i to, że ani technologii przerobu biomasy, ani wiatraków nie będziemy kupować od wielkich koncernów, powiązanych z rządami kluczowych potęg świata? Ale czy to jest argument przeciw energetyce jądrowej, czy raczej za nią?
Jaki jest rzeczywisty bilans „za i przeciw” energetyki jądrowej dla gospodarki, pozycji międzynarodowej i rozwoju społecznego Polski? Jak najlepiej możemy zdyskontować zakup kosztownej karty członkowskiej ekskluzywnego klubu atomowego? Odpowiedzi na te i inne ważne pytania padły na Międzynarodowym Forum Energetyki Jądrowej, które odbyło się 29 listopada 2012 roku w Warszawie.
Organizatorem spotkania byli: magazyn The Warsaw Voice oraz PowerMeetings.pl, znana w branży, wyspecjalizowana firma konferencyjno-szkoleniowa.

Warsztaty „Sztuka Nauki” organizowane od dwóch lat przez Teatr GO cieszą się niesłabnącą popularnością. W 2012 r. uczestniczyło w nich 500 osób w cyklu 10 spotkań. Dzieci oraz młodzież starsza, zaskakiwane nową technologia, pragną zrozumieć zjawiska zachodzące w przyrodzie i w tym celu zwiedzają IFPiLM, rozmawiają z naukowcami, poprzez żarty wymyślają scenariusze o atomach do spektakli teatralnych. Dyrektor IFPiLM prof. Andrzej Gałkowski na spotkaniu podsumowującym warsztaty w 2012 r. wyraził uznanie dla działalności dyrektora Włodzimierza Gołaszewskiego, dzięki której u młodzieży budowane jest zaufanie do nauki.
Plany Teatru GO dotyczące współpracy międzynarodowej na 2013 r. obejmują m.in. warsztaty z młodzieżą z Budapesztu, które zostaną zwieńczone widowiskiem.
Minister Barbara Kudrycka przekazała na ręce dyrektorów instytucji naukowych list z informacją o wydanych przez Ministerstwo Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego broszurach, które zostały opracowane na rzecz upowszechniania dobrych praktyk akademickich oraz promowania najwyższych standardów w działalności naukowej.
Publikacje „Dobre praktyki w procedurach recenzyjnych w nauce” i „Rzetelność w badaniach naukowych oraz poszanowanie własności intelektualnej” zostały przygotowane przez Zespół do Spraw Etyki w Nauce oraz Zespół do Spraw Dobrych Praktyk Akademickich. Publikacje zawierają m.in. najważniejsze wskazania co do powinności podmiotów zamawiających oraz przyjmujących recenzje, powinności recenzentów, najczęściej występujące uchybienia popełniane przez badaczy w procedurach grantowych, a także naruszenia atrybucji autorstwa.
Wydawnictwa są dostępne na stronie internetowej Ministerstwa i służyć będą zminimalizowaniu nieprawidłowości występujących w środowisku akademickim, a także wpłyną na umocnienie polskiej nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego.

Parafrazując słowa klasyka – 36 lat minęło jak jeden dzień, jak jeden spektakl bez antraktu, z udziałem zmieniających się głównych aktorów – Dyrekcji i członków Załogi IFPiLM. Scenerią tegorocznego jubileuszu były sale Teatru GO propagującego od wielu lat naukę poprzez sztukę i sztukę poprzez naukę. Zaproszenie na uroczystość przyjęło wielu szacownych gości, wśród których znaleźli się przedstawiciele świata nauki, prof. Marek J. Sadowski - Honorowy Przewodniczący Rady Naukowej IFPiLM, dr Mirosław Szczurek, wicedyrektor Instytut Optoelektroniki, z którym Instytut FPiLM łączą od lat wspólne zainteresowania, oraz biznesu, m.in. dr Mirosław Grudzień i dyr. Krzysztof Więcław (Vigo System Ltd.), Ryszard Socha i Krzyszto Tomaszewski (ACS), dr Wacław Muniak i dr Ryszard Wodnicki (Solaris Optics S.A.), dr Adam Dubicki (Sensornet), red. Marek Bielski („Urządzenia dla Energetyki”). Obecni bli pracownicy Instytutu, którzy wciągu ostatniego roku odeszli na emeryturę.
Dyrektor IFPiLM prof. Andrzej Gałkowski przedstawił w krótkiej prezentacji historię Instytutu, kładąc szczególny nacisk na tegoroczne osiągniecia, w tym nowych doktorów i laureatów konkursu o nagrodę dyrektora. Wręczenie dyplomów poprzedziły wystąpienia młodych naukowców, którzy przybliżyli zebranym obszary swoich zainteresowań w przystępny i dowcipny sposób.
Pamiątką z tegorocznej uroczystości będą zdjęcia zebranych dostępne w galerii.

„Brak inwestycji w naukę to inwestycja w ignorancję”. IFPiLM do walki z ignorancją dokłada i swoją cegiełkę – po raz pierwszy zaprasza w swoje progi młodzież i dorosłych oferując bogaty wybór wykładów i pokazów w ramach XVI edycji Festiwalu Nauki. Wśród poruszonych tematów znajdzie się fuzja jądrowa jako rozwiązanie problemów energetycznych świata, oddziaływanie laser-plazma jako źródło szybkich cząstek oraz satelitarne silniki plazmowe. Będziemy mogli wysłuchać wykładu o tym, czy możliwe jest Słońce na Ziemi.
Połączenie lekkich atomów jakie zachodzi w Słońcu prowadzi do uwolnienia bardzo dużej ilości energii. Czy możliwe jest przeprowadzenie takiego procesu na Ziemi? W jaki sposób możemy do niego doprowadzić? Czy jesteśmy w stanie nad nim zapanować? W jakim kierunku zmierzamy - połacie wiatraków, czy nowoczesne urządzenia produkujące energię (ITER)? Wszystkich, którzy chcą poznać tajniki przepisu na utworzenie i opanowanie gwiazdy na Ziemi zapraszamy do Instytutu Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy na serię wykładów popularnonaukowych.
Informacje przedstawione będą w sposób przystępny, by przybliżyć podstawy teoretyczne reakcji jądrowej i metody takiego utrzymywania plazmy, by mogła w niej zachodzić fuzja. Omówione będą aktualnie pracujące urządzenia do wspomnianych badań takich jak Plazma Fokus (w IFPiLM), tokamaki (np. JET w Wielkiej Brytanii) oraz światowe projekty ITER i HiPER, których celem jest budowa reaktora termojądrowego.
Pokazy dotyczyć będą m.in. tego, jak zmierzyć grubość włosa (doświadczenie Younga) - laserem oświetlamy włos i obserwujemy obraz powstały na ekranie. Uczeni zapraszają również na pomiar trójwymiarowy powierzchni monety za pomocą profilometru.
