W dniach 15-19 lipca naukowcy z Instytutu Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy wzięli udział w International Conferences on Research and Applications of Plasmas, PLASMA-2019 organizowanej przez Uniwersytet Opolski. Jednym z zaproszonych wykładowców była dr Monika Kubkowska z IFPiLM, która podczas swojego wykładu zaprezentowała koncepcję diagnostyki PHA (z ang. pulse height analysis) opracowaną we współpracy IFPiLM i IPP Greifswald dla stellaratora Wendelstein 7-X oraz przedstawiła zastosowane detektory, sposób analizy danych oraz przykładowe wyniki uzyskane podczas ostatnich kampanii eksperymentalnych na W7-X.
Podczas konferencji swoje wystąpienia mieli także: prof. Tadeusz Pisarczyk, dr Jarosław Domański, dr Paweł Gąsior, dr Piotr Rączka, mgr Tomasz Fornal, mgr Wojciech Gromelski, mgr Maciej Jakubczak i mgr Agnieszka Szelecka.
Naukowcy wzięli również udział w uroczystej kolacji w zabytkowej rezydencji w Mosznej, odwiedzili Muzeum Politechniki Opolskiej i Lamp Rentgenowskich, Muzeum Polskiej Piosenki oraz Park Nauki i Rozrywki w Krasiejowie, w którym mieści się JuraPark – największy park dinozaurów w Europie, a także oglądali zaćmienie Księżyca, goszcząc na terenie kampusu uniwersyteckiego.

16 lipca w Instytucie Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy odbyło się spotkanie, na którym przedstawiciele Centrum Badań Kosmiczych PAN, Wojskowej Akademii Technicznej, Politechniki Warszawskiej i IFPiLM przeprowadzili rozmowy mające na celu zainicjowanie współpracy i złożenie wspólnego wniosku projektowego dotyczącego silników jonowych.
W spotkaniu wzięli udział: prof. Iwona Stanisławska - dyrektor CBK PAN, prof. Zbigniew Kłos, dr hab. Stanisław Lewiński, dr Piotr Orleański (CBK PAN), przewodniczący Rady Naukowej IFPiLM prof. Ryszard Romaniuk (PW), gen. dr Adam Sowa (WAT), a ze strony IFPiLM dr hab. Andrzej Gałkowski - dyrektor, prof. Zbigniew Peradzyński oraz dr Jacek Kurzyna - kierownik Laboratorium Plazmowych Napędów Satelitarnych.
Dyrektor Instytutu przedstawił główne kierunki badań prowadzonych w IFPiLM, źródła finansowania prac naukowych oraz wyniki oceny IFPiLM w ostatnich trzech ewaluacjach przeprowadzonych przez KEJN. Podkreślił także znaczenie podjętej inicjatywy współpracy oraz zwrócił uwagę na potrzebę pozyskania nowej kadry.
Ostatnim punktem spotkania była wizyta gości w laboratoriach Instytutu. Dr Jacek Kurzyna zaprezentował uczestnikom Laboratorium Plazmowych Napędów Satelitarnych, a w nim kryptonowy silnik Halla działający w komorze próżniowej do symulacji warunków kosmicznych. Z kolei dr Marian Paduch opowiedział na temat układu PF-1000U (jedno z największych na świecie urządzeń typu plasma focus) i jego diagnostycznego wyposażenia. Kolejne spotkanie grupy inicjatywnej zaplanowane zostało na sierpień.
Instytut Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy od lat współpracuje z laserowym ośrodkiem badawczym w Pradze – PALS Research Center, Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Science. Naukowcy z IFPiLM pod kierunkiem prof. Tadeusza Pisarczyka i dr. Marcina Rosińskiego realizują obecnie w czeskiej placówce europejskie projekty w ramach konsorcjum Laserlab Europe z udziałem uczonych z innych laboratoriów. Prace te dotyczą badań oddziaływań laser-materia i fuzji laserowej.
W ostatnim czasie nastąpiły zmiany organizacyjne w PALS RC. Stanowisko dyrektora naukowego objął dr Libor Juha. Podsumowano wyniki dotychczasowej działalności i przygotowano program dotyczący zastosowania układu PALS do dalszych badań generacji i fizyki gęstej plazmy w ramach szerokiej współpracy międzynarodowej.
Prof. Jerzy Wołowski z IFPiLM został zaproszony do kontynuowania udziału w międzynarodowej radzie konsultacyjnej (International Advisory Board – IAB) przy PALS Research Center.

– Gdy uda nam się opanować produkcję energii syntezy termojądrowej, to pozyskamy źródło energii na miliony lat – mówi w wywiadzie dla „Tygodnika Powszechnego” dr Marcin Jakubowski, który zajmuje się badaniami nad syntezą termojądrową w Instytucie Fizyki Maxa Plancka w Greifswaldzie (Niemcy) przy projekcie Wendelstein 7-X. Instytut, w którym znajduje się eksperymentalny reaktor termojądrowy W 7-X, należy do konsorcjum EUROfusion. Instytut Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy (IFPiLM) również jest członkiem tego konsorcjum, a także koordynatorem badań fuzyjnych w Polsce, w ramach krajowego Centrum naukowo-przemysłowego Nowe Technologie Energetyczne (CeNTE), w którego skład wchodzi 16 polskich instytucji badawczych. Krajowy Punkt Kontaktowy Euratom-Fusion w IFPiLM opracowuje roczne plany badań, koordynuje, monitoruje i raportuje prace badawczo-rozwojowe wszystkich jednostek biorących udział w programie oraz współuczestniczy przy tworzeniu mechanizmów współpracy pomiędzy poszczególnymi ośrodkami.
W badania na stellaratorze Wendelstein 7-X zaangażowanych jest wiele instytucji naukowych z Niemiec, USA, Japonii oraz Unii Europejskiej. Swój udział mają też polskie placówki – w tym Instytut Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy.

Kilkanaście ośrodków naukowych w Polsce zajmuje się badaniami fuzyjnymi. Program europejskiej Wspólnoty Euratom w zakresie fuzji jądrowej koordynuje i finansuje Konsorcjum EUROfusion. Instytut Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy jest członkiem tego Konsorcjum i koordynatorem badań fuzyjnych w Polsce, w ramach krajowego Centrum naukowo-przemysłowego Nowe Technologie Energetyczne (CeNTE). Obszar merytoryczny działania Centrum obejmuje prace w zakresie badań i rozwoju nowych technologii energetycznych, w tym technologii termojądrowej konwersji energii, technologii pokrewnych i wspomagających. Program tego Centrum obejmuje również projekty realizowane przez konsorcjum EUROfusion, dotyczące prototypowego reaktora fuzyjnego ITER budowanego w południowej Francji w ramach światowego projektu także o nazwie ITER. Obecnie w skład CeNTE wchodzi 16 polskich instytucji badawczych. 25 stycznia 2019 roku do Centrum dołączyła Politechnika Łódzka.
Na stronie Polskiej Agencji Prasowej 27 marca 2019 roku ukazał się obszerny materiał dotyczący budowy reaktora ITER oraz udziału naukowców z Politechniki Łódzkiej w tym projekcie.
