Senat przyjął uchwałę ustanawiającą rok 2020 Rokiem Fizyki. W przyszłym roku będziemy także obchodzić 100-lecie powstania Polskiego Towarzystwa Fizycznego.
„Ustanowienie przez Senat Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej roku 2020 Rokiem Fizyki jest uhonorowaniem polskich fizyków i ich osiągnięć, a także docenieniem cywilizacyjnego znaczenia tej dziedziny nauki. Chcemy, aby Rok Fizyki przyniósł jeszcze większe uznanie w naszym społeczeństwie dla roli nauki, w szczególności fizyki oraz jej wkładu w rozwój gospodarki i wpływu na nasze życie codzienne. Zainteresowanie fizyką, niezwykle ciekawą nauką eksperymentalną, przekłada się na wzrost umiejętności w tym zakresie kolejnych pokoleń. Podejmowana działalność naukowa i zawodowa w tym obszarze jest szczególnie ważna w czasie budowy społeczeństwa informacyjnego i gospodarki opartej na wiedzy” – głosi uchwała.

Dnia 24 września 2019 roku, decyzją Ministra Energii Pana Krzysztofa Tchórzewskiego, na stanowisko dyrektora Instytutu Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy im. Sylwestra Kaliskiego został ponownie powołany dr hab. Andrzej Gałkowski, który funkcję dyrektora IFPiLM sprawuje od 2010 r.
Dr hab. Andrzej Gałkowski jest związany z Instytutem od 1976 roku. Przez wiele lat pełnił funkcję zastępcy dyrektora ds. naukowych. W latach 2004-2011 koordynował prace Asocjacji Euratom-IFPiLM – skupiającej 11 instytucji naukowych w Polsce prowadzących prace badawczo-rozwojowe na rzecz europejskiego programu fuzji jądrowej oraz międzynarodowego programu ITER. Był członkiem Komitetu Doradczego Komisji Europejskiej (CCE-FU) ds. programu fuzji jądrowej Wspólnoty Euratom oraz Komitetu Koordynującego Porozumienia EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement).
Obecny dyrektor jest absolwentem Wojskowej Akademii Technicznej, Wydziału Chemii i Fizyki Technicznej – specjalność fizyka techniczna. Tytuł doktora nauk technicznych uzyskał w roku 1981 w WAT. W 1996 roku habilitował się w Instytucie Problemów Jądrowych na podstawie rozprawy, w której zajmował się równowagą magnetohydrodynamiczną plazmy gorącej z makroskopowymi przepływami. Prowadził także badania naukowe w ośrodkach naukowych w Wielkiej Brytanii i USA.
Instytut Fizyki Plazmy i Laserowej Mikrosyntezy 7 września uczestniczył w Astro Pikniku połączonym z piątymi urodzinami Centrum Nauki Leonardo da Vinci w miejscowości Podzamcze koło Chęcin. Wydarzenie to organizowane od czterech lat przez Regionalne Centrum Naukowo-Technologiczne popularyzuje naukę i technologię oraz upowszechnia wiedzę z dziedziny fizyki i astronomii.
Uczestnicy pikniku dowiedzieli się od naszych naukowców, na czym polega reakcja syntezy termojądrowej oraz jakie warunki muszą zostać spełnione, aby w kontrolowany sposób można ją było przeprowadzać w warunkach laboratoryjnych. Poznali też najważniejsze projekty realizowane w naszym Instytucie dotyczące fuzji jądrowej.
Osobom odwiedzającym stoisko Instytutu została zaprezentowana makieta przedstawiająca przyszłą elektrownię termojądrową DEMO. Najmłodsi mieli okazję dotknąć "kulę plazmową" i poznać jej działanie, ustawić lewitującą kulę ziemską w polu magnetycznym, a także ułożyć puzzle ukazujące komorę tokamaka oraz samo urządzenie.
Wydarzenie cieszyło się dużym zainteresowaniem wśród odwiedzających i z roku na rok przyciąga coraz większą liczbę wystawców z całej Polski.

DONES Info Day odbędzie się 17 września 2019 r. o godz. 11.00 w Centrum Konferencyjnym Zielna przy ul. Zielnej 37 w Warszawie.
W trakcie spotkania reprezentanci polskich firm i instytucji badawczo-naukowych będą mieli okazję z pierwszej ręki dowiedzieć się, jakie są możliwości i zasady kooperacji z IFMIF-DONES.

IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – DEMO Oriented NEutron Source) to nowa infrastruktura badawczo-rozwojowa, która ma powstać w Hiszpanii. Celem ośrodka będzie testowanie, walidacja i kwalifikacja materiałów stosowanych w reaktorach termojądrowych. Planowany budżet przedsięwzięcia to aż 710 mln euro. Wrocławski Park Technologiczny we współpracy z Komisją Europejską organizuje misję POLAND@ITER 2019. Projekt ma na celu przybliżenie możliwości i zasad kooperacji z ITER.
W dniach 17 i 18 października 2019 r. w Saint-Paul-lès-Durance we Francji przedstawiciele ITER i Komisji Europejskiej zaprezentują perspektywy współpracy z polskimi firmami i instytucjami oraz przybliżą im postępowania przetargowe organizacji. Kluczową częścią misji będą indywidualne spotkania uczestników ze specjalistami ds. przetargów F4E oraz inżynierami z różnych działów technicznych projektu. Drugiego dnia wydarzenia będą oni mieli unikalną okazję do wizyty na budowie ITER. Misję zakończy sesja dyskusyjna o wyzwaniach i perspektywach polskiego sektora high-tech w kontekście kooperacji z ITER.

ITER (ang. International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor – Międzynarodowy Eksperymentalny Reaktor Termonuklearny) to międzynarodowe przedsięwzięcie realizowane przez kraje członkowskie UE, USA, Chiny, Koreę Południową, Szwajcarię, Rosję, Japonię oraz Indie. Określa się go jako najambitniejszą inicjatywę naukową na świecie. Wkładem UE w projekt ITER zarządza F4E, czyli Fuzja dla Energii (ang. Fusion for Energy) – organizacja Unii Europejskiej. Jej budżet na lata 2021-2027 wynosi aż 6 miliardów euro.
