Abstract

DONES (acronym from DEMO Oriented Neutron Source) is a research infrastructure currently being constructed in Andalusia, southern Spain. DONES aims to test the structure materials of the foreseen DEMO – demonstrational fusion power plant. The materials under investigation will be exposed to a strong field of high-energy neutrons when kept at a constantly elevated temperature. The irradiation conditions are to correspond to the ones expected in DEMO.

Deuteron accelerator is a main component of the DONES facility. The 125 mA current of deuterons accelerated to 40 MeV will hit the curtain of flowing (liquid) lithium. The nuclear stripping reactions lead to the generation of high-energy neutrons.

Behind the liquid lithium curtain, the irradiation (test) modules are to be located. The modules contain either the stacks of metal (steel alloy) samples kept in liquid sodium at a constantly elevated temperature, or the nuclear detectors used to characterize the radiation field parameters.

Whereas, the neutrons that pass through the irradiation modules are to be further used for fundamental physics research and applied nuclear science.

The IPPLM team activities in the DONES facility program focus mostly on nuclear engineering and radiation transport calculations. They will be the topic of the lecture.
