Abstract

Recurrence Plot (RP) is a valuable graphical tool for time series analysis. RP creates a square matrix whose elements correspond to the times in which the state of the dynamic system repeats. RPs display important information about time scales which are not easily obtainable by other methods. Often, characteristic patterns which appear in the RPs can be used to classify dynamic processes [1]. Symmetrized Dot Pattern (SDP) is a method of imaging changes in the amplitude and frequency of the signal, which maps the normalized time series into symmetric patterns on a polar graph. SDP can alert of an unusual phenomenon such as a sudden drop in value or breaking a trend. This demonstrates the possibility of employing SDP in monitoring in real time changes taking place in different time sequences [2]. In this seminar, both methods will be introduced and some examples of application to the visualization of plasma dynamics will be presented.
