The new hands on display are copies of the actual tiles used in the ITER-Like Wall project, supplied by the manufacturers for practice purposes. Before installing the tiles into JET, the practice versions were screwed into a jig the same size as the vessel, to ensure that the components – over 80 000 of them, supplied by many different manufacturers – fitted together properly. This also gave an opportunity for the installation team to hone their procedures, which was especially important as much of the work was carried out by the remote handling system.

However, now the work is completed the ITER-Like Wall team has kindly offered these samples as touchable exhibits – giving visitors a real feel for the inside of the JET vessel!
