The Lab of Laser Plasma Spectroscopy was established in January 2020 to build a team dealing with Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) both in terms of application and the development of this increasingly popular method.

The core of the team are people associated with LIBS research carried out in cooperation with international teams under EUROfusion programs. The main subject of these projects is PWI (Plasma Wall Interaction) research. The most important achievement was conducting in 2019 the first successful experiments in the world with a remote-controlled LIBS head allowing the characterization of the internal wall of the FTU tokamak and samples installed inside it. This success became possible thanks to cooperation with ENEA Frascati.

In addition to fusion research, the team is interested in various applications of LIBS in scientific and research fields (including metallurgy, agriculture, detection of hazardous substances, etc.). Another area of ​​activity is research on plasma physics in multi-pulse laser interactions, which in many respects are still a puzzle for science. The closest challenge for the team is to use machine learning methods and neural networks in their research. Fortunately, the first steps on this path have already been made.
Responsibility for the team's development was entrusted to Dr. Paweł Gąsior, who is convinced that his experience in the fields of laser plasma physics and metrology as well as broad scientific interests will help create an interdisciplinary team with great research capabilities.

Research projects carried out at the IPPLM are funded by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the National Science Centre and by the European Commission within the framework of EUROfusion Consortium under grant agreement No 633053. Financial support comes also from the International Atomic Energy Agency, European Space Agency and LaserLab Consortium as well as from the Fusion for Energy Agency.
